How DHL Tracking Works

DHL tracking shows shipment movement through DHL’s delivery network and partner carrier network. The tracking result may show whether your package is picked up, in transit, processed at a facility, cleared by customs, out for delivery, delivered, delayed, or waiting for the next scan.

  1. Find your DHL tracking number, waybill number, or shipment ID.
  2. Enter the number into the tracking box.
  3. Check the latest shipment status, delivery progress, and scan history.
  4. If the package is delayed or held, review the latest DHL tracking message for next steps.

Where to Find Your DHL Tracking Number

Your DHL tracking number is usually available in the shipping confirmation email, online store order page, DHL account, shipment receipt, waybill, label, or seller dashboard.

If you ordered from an online shop, the DHL tracking number may appear after the seller creates the shipping label or hands the package to DHL. DHL tracking numbers may also be called waybill numbers, shipment IDs, tracking IDs, or shipment reference numbers. If yours won’t load, see our guide on a tracking number that isn’t working.

DHL Express vs DHL eCommerce Tracking

DHL Express is commonly used for fast international shipments, business shipments, and time-sensitive deliveries. DHL eCommerce is commonly used for online shopping parcels and may involve a local postal or delivery partner for final delivery — see our DHL eCommerce tracking page, or DHL Parcel UK for UK parcels.

If your DHL tracking number shows limited updates, check whether the shipment is handled by DHL Express, DHL eCommerce, DHL Parcel, DHL Freight, or a local delivery partner. Some shipments may show DHL updates first and local carrier updates later.

DHL tracking updates may appear at different times depending on when the package is scanned by DHL facilities, customs offices, local delivery teams, or partner carriers.

Why Is DHL Tracking Not Updating?

DHL tracking may not update immediately after shipment information is created. Tracking can also pause when a package is moving between countries, waiting for customs clearance, traveling long distance, delayed by weather, held because of address issues, or handed to a local delivery partner.

If your DHL package hasn’t updated for a short time, check again later. If it hasn’t moved for several days, review the latest tracking message and contact DHL, the seller, or the online shop for help. Our guides on tracking not updating and a package stuck in transit explain what’s normal and what to do.

DHL Says Delivered but Package Not Received

If DHL tracking says delivered but you can’t find your package, check your front door, side door, mailbox area, garage, building reception, parcel locker, neighbors, and any safe place near your delivery address.

If the package still can’t be found, check the tracking details for delivery location information or proof of delivery, then contact DHL and the seller or sender. Our guide on delivered but not received has a full checklist.

DHL Customs Clearance Meaning

DHL customs clearance means your international shipment is being reviewed by customs authorities. Customs may check shipment details, duties, taxes, product descriptions, import rules, or required paperwork before the package continues to delivery. Learn more in our guide to customs clearance.

A package can sometimes pause during customs clearance. If DHL or customs needs more information, the sender, receiver, or importer may need to provide documents or payment before the shipment can continue — see package stuck in customs.

DHL Tracking Number Not Found

If your DHL tracking number is not found, the shipment may not have received its first DHL scan yet, or you may be using the number in the wrong DHL tracking system. Double-check the number for missing digits, extra spaces, or typing mistakes.

If the order was just shipped, wait and try again later. If the tracking ID still doesn’t work, contact the seller, shipper, or online shop and ask them to confirm the tracking number and DHL service type. Beware of fake DHL tracking numbers sent by scam texts.

DHL Handoff to Local Carrier

Some DHL eCommerce and international shipments may be handed to a local postal service or delivery partner for final delivery. In the USA, this may involve USPS for some final-mile deliveries — see our guide on the DHL to USPS handoff. In the UK, it may involve DHL eCommerce UK, Royal Mail, or another local delivery partner depending on the service.

When a handoff happens, DHL tracking may show early international movement, while the local carrier may show final delivery updates after the package reaches the destination country.

DHL International Tracking

DHL international tracking can show pickup, export processing, customs clearance, import scans, transit between countries, delivery attempts, and final delivery. International DHL shipments may pause during customs review, airline transfer, border processing, or local delivery handoff.
